Theatre Classes

Intro I and II

This course will introduce the beginning actor to creative dramatics. A sampling of units includes: improvisation, pantomime, voice and diction, body movement, blocking, basic theatre terminology, introduction to theatre history, mask making, stage combat, scene performances, simple scene writing, and viewing of live theatre. Students will perform a variety of scenes for the class, occasionally in costume and with simple props. In addition, students are required to attend at least one North Central High School theatre production per semester.

Students will build upon the concepts learned in Theatre Arts I. A sampling of units includes: acting theory, auditioning, monologue study and performance, memorized acting scenes, in-depth character/ script analysis, musical theatre, improvisation, scene writing, dramatic literature, directing, and possible production of a one-act play. There will be opportunities to participate in local field trips. In addition, students are required to attend at least one North Central High School theatre production per semester.

Advanced Theatre

Students will read, analyze, and perform from plays. They will draw on events and experiences to create scripted monologues, scenes, and one-act plays. Students may also create simple designs for the class productions and will build characters through observation, improvisation, and script analysis. While exploring the performances for the course, students will also incorporate theatre history, culture, analysis, and integrated studies. Additionally, students will explore careers in theatre arts and begin to develop a portfolio of their work. Students are required to attend all North Central High School theatre productions. Students must audition for the course. Students can enroll in Advanced Theatre Arts for multiple semesters and years

Reperatory Theatre

While studying advanced concepts, students in Repertory Theatre will produce at least one show each year for public performance. A sampling of units includes: improvisation, memorized duo acting scenes, monologues, open scenes, musical theatre, directing, group acting scenes, producing, reading of dramatic literature, children’s theatre, and much more. Every third year, this class will make a voluntary trip to New York City to attend theatre and to participate in workshops and master classes with working Broadway actors. Other years, students will have opportunities to attend 昀椀eld trips in Indianapolis and/or Chicago. Students must audition for the course. Auditions will include, at minimum, a memorized monologue, improvisation, and other performance activities prepared by the instructor. Students can enroll in Repertory Theatre for multiple years.
